How to truncate the log file in SQL Server

There might have happened that you needed to truncate the log file because the server run out of space, but no matter what you do, you don't get that log file truncated in SQL Server.

To truncate the log file, you need to run the two following command in this same order:

BACKUP LOG database_name WITH TRUNCATE_ONLY

DBCC SHRINKFILE(database_log, 10)

Where database_name is the name of the database you want the log to be truncated. The database_log is the logical name of the log you need to truncate. The last parameter is the number of MB you need the log to be reduced to, in this case is to be reduced to 10 megabytes.

If you are not sure about the log name, check it through the Microsoft SQL Management Studio (usually going to the properties of the database, option Files).

There is a big note on this procedure though, be careful when you do this, because you will loose most of the information in the log. It is always recommended to make regular backups (complete backups if possible) to avoid loosing information.

How to change identity value in SQL Server

Sometimes you will need to change the next identity value of a primary key in SQL Server. It might be because you wiped out the table and want to start counting from one or because you want to force it to start counting from an specific value.

There are two ways to do this. The first one is changing the value through the Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio:

1. Right click the table and select the option to modify the table.

2. Then change the value directly into the editor and save the table modification.

The other option to change the identity value is running the following query:

dbcc checkident('mytablename', reseed, 0)

Where mytablename is the name of the table you want to reseed. The last parameter '0' (zero) is the previous value of the next value you want to create. In this case, the next insert will insert 1 as the primary key. If you use for example 49, the next insert value will be 50.

Select stored procedures and function names from SQL Server

Select table names in SQL Server

The following query will give you a list of the table names of a database in SQL Server. Note that this is a query done directly into the sysobjects which is not recommended for production purposes, but it could get you out of problems if you need the table names from the database.

The query is:

select [name] from dbo.sysobjects where xtype='U'

If you are curious enough, you will see that you should be able to get the Creation Date too:

select [name],[crdate] from dbo.sysobjects where xtype='U'

Microsoft Surface is one of the latest technologies being develop by MS. It is a device that allows to interact with the users without the need of a mouse or keyboard. The device resembles a screen table where the multimedia content can be handled by the users.

In the years to come, Microsoft will make a fundamental change in the way we interact with software and documents. Microsoft Surface employs a camera-based system to track the user input.

Microsoft Surface is capable of recognizing multiple inputs at the same time, allowing the two hands to be used, this is a big difference from the mouse which only allows one single point of input at the time.

Another important feature of Surface is that it interacts with devices such as cameras and mobile phones, allowing documents and files to be shown in the table surface so the user can do whatever he wants with them, like watching them and/or uploading them to other devices.

Some history of the idea of Microsoft Surface started in 2001, when Microsoft Research started brainstorming some of the concepts that we can see today working in a real interactive table. By early 2003, the first prototype was already built. By 2004 there were already more than 85 prototypes built, with refined features.

This new technology will change the way we interact with computers, allowing companies to explore new ways of doing business. Next I will show you a video were you will see what this is all about.

Select column names in SQL Server

The following query will give you the the columns of an specific table in SQL Server. This is useful sometimes when you need the names.

select column_name, data_type, character_maximum_length from information_schema.columnswhere table_name = 'table_name'

If you need the names in an excel row, I will recommend the following:

Perform the query above
Copy the column with the names in a textpad
Replace character \n with ,
Save the file with extension .csv
Open the .csv file with Excel
Copy and paste the headers (which should be each name in each cell) to wherever you need them

Project Planning Guidelines

It is usually said that the information technology projects always have delays and cost far more than originally budgeted, and without the results set from the beginning. This can happen for a number of reasons that I will describe next.

Most of the information technology projects have multiple components or sub-projects that are not well identified, which effectively makes the length and cost of it to be much higher, even if it is achieving its objectives of functionality and service as originally stipulated.

There are also some responsibilities unique to the customer such as the redesign of processes, the processes of migration, coexistence, cleaning data, definition and implementation of security profiles, definition of testing applications, and many others that can delay the project.

Another crucial aspect has to do with the amount of changes that were made to accept the applications. In "accelerated” implementations they are virtually abolished, as the process of defining the requirement, programming, testing and acceptance is quite long and would cause severe delays in project implementation.

The clear definition of the scope in terms of changes is crucial both for the development of the project, and for the subsequent maintenance of the applications. When developing an application, it is important to define the project in different stages marked by blocks of functionality and complete them on different versions of the application.

It is intended, by implementing a new system, to make things easier for the company and users. However, if you miss a revision to the current process and procedures, it is conceivable that at the time of putting into production the system will encounter operational hurdles that must be tackled in the middle of change.

Finally, do not neglect two processes that have to do with the current information: the coexistence and migration. The first is that you will have two systems (the old and new) operating simultaneously for a few months. For example, is likely to charge under the new system, but that accounting is still in the old or the new system is ready but the accounting assistants are still in the old system. The decision on putting applications into production is closely linked to decisions on conveniences at this stage of coexistence.

The migration is for the relocation of the current and historical information on current systems to the new one. Be careful with what you need on the new system.

The information technology projects do not necessarily have to last or cost more than originally agreed, it depends on how aware you are about these and other considerations, that typically are learned in the field.

How to avoid keyloggers

What is a keylogger? A keylogger is a software or hardware that monitors whatever you type and record or send those keystrokes to the malicious user.

A hardware keylogger is easy to find, just check the connector between the keyboard and the motherboard of the computer. If you see something strange like an adapter, be suspicious; especially if you are using a public computer.

The software type is more difficult to detect. Although if you don’t have time to find out, do the following. If you need to use the password many times, you can do this in a notepad and save it. Then all you have to do is to copy/paste the password into the textbox that requests it.

First, type a random key. Then select that letter with the mouse and type your first password letter. Then you type another two random keys and with the mouse select those two letters and type the next letter in your password. You can do this until you complete your password, with differences on the number of letters typed. This way, the recorded string will be scrambled within the sequence of keystrokes.

This is very useful, especially for those who play online games like World of Warcraft, where malicious people steal accounts. I hope this will help those who might want to protect this valuable piece of information that is your password.

OLED TVs

The energy savings, in addition to the materials and recycling, is one of the key variables of concern to the industry. In television, the new generation of organic displays OLED consumes up to 40% less energy compared with current LCD. Sony has already released in Japan its first commercial model, which does not reach Europe until the end of 2009.

At the same screen size, each year is reduced to 5% of the amount of energy consumed by a TV. LCD screens are always lit; to get dark colors simply flip light. With the OLED, the light diodes light up only when are needed. To capitalize on the environmental hitch, Toshiba has just launched in Japan the 921T, the first PC and laptop with OLED screen. The business models of low-power are starting to attract consumers. Lenovo launched its bid with the ThinkCentre A61e green, 90% built with recyclable materials and the ability to charge the battery via a solar panel. And Dell launched its OptiPlex 755 line as the most efficient market in energy consumption, 80% less than other models on the market.

But for now, U.S. and European low-cost laptops and consumption are not quite convincing. At the expense of technological advances, improved energy efficiency and environmentally friendly materials, they often involve lousy features. The green GPC is the case of the American Everex, for sale in the United States for 199 dollars. Based on Linux, the CPU consumes only an average of 2 watts. However, its low of 1.5 GHz processor, 512 MB of RAM and rough design has generated different opinions. Wired magazine says it is a "bargain for users with basic needs". The magazine PC Magazine describes it as "a typical Christmas gift that one returns in January".

The question about the availability of consumers to pay for green technology is more open than ever. According to the British technology consultancy Canalys, 55% of European consumers would be willing to pay up to 10% more for appliances manufactured that are good for the environment.

Spain is the country that seems to be more aware. More than two thirds of Spanish consumers are willing to pay for green electronics, compared with 55% in Italy or 40% in the UK.

6. Change Control
Every project needs to be flexible or it will break. The change control is a very important step that needs to be defined in the project charter.

7. Real Milestones
Create measurements that are tangible and are aligned with the project mission. The project will need to be adjusted if these milestones are not met.

8. Tolerance
Risks need to be always taken into account. Each risk will need to have a level of tolerance, so this will allow PMs to know when to pull the plug.

9. Ownership
Make sure one person is responsible for the project. This will avoid dead locks, because there will not be two persons saying "I thought you were going to do that".

10. Templates

Home Buyer Using IRA

If you want to take out your 401(k) or IRA to buy a first-time home, what would be the tax consequences?

The withdrawals are taxable as ordinary income. But if you can qualify for a new tax credit, you may be able to postpone paying the bill.

First the basic rules:
Anyone can take up to $10,000 from an IRA to buy a first home without incurring a 10 percent early-withdrawal penalty, but the money is taxable. You can take taxable withdrawals from 401(k) plan for any reason, if you no longer work for the company that sponsors the plan. If you do, you can only take "hardship withdrawals", for a limited number of reasons. Buying a primary residence is one of them. But "hardship" withdrawals are subject to both tax and early-withdrawal penalty.

A 401(k) loan may be an alternative. What about the tax credit?. The 2008 Housing Act offers a temporary tax credit worth up to $7,500 for people who buy their first home between April 8, 2008 and July 1, 2009. A tax credit cuts your taxes dollar for dollar. However, you must pay the credit back over 15 years, starting the second year after you claim it. It's essentially an interest-free, 15-year loan from Uncle Sam.

To be eligible you cannot have owned a principal residence during the three-year period before the purchase date. And you can't earn too much: The credit phases out for married couples filing jointly whose modified adjusted gross income is between $150,000 and $170,000 a year, and individuals whose modified adjusted gross income is between $75,000 and $95,000.

Everybody makes mistakes. But when it comes to money, even little errors can prove devastating. If you committed one, how can it be fixed?

Paying more than just the minimums
Credit card minimum payments can leave you in debt, for the rest of your life. If you make only the minimum payment on a $10,000 loan at 18%, it will take 42 years to pay off that debt. And it will cost you many times the amount you originally charged.

The best idea is to use credit cards just for convenience, paying them off each month. If you can't do that, at least pay more than the minimum.

Dollar dribbling
At the end of the month, consumers' pockets are empty and they're confused. "Where did all the money go?". It went to dozens of little, regular expenditures. There are people that are living paycheck to paycheck, but they're buying two cups of Starbucks coffee every morning, renting movies at Blockbuster and going to fast-food places for lunch. It adds up really quickly.

These expenses are called "dribblers" because of the slow leaks they create in a monthly budget. The estimation is that the typical consumer dribbles out at least $50 to $100 a month, and ofter far more.

Plugging these leaks is easy once you find them. The solution: Keep a notebook with you and write down every expense, from $1 candy bar to the $3 latte. At the end of the month, add them up and decide whether the expenses are worth budgeting for or whether they ought to be eliminated.

Building a small cushion
Everyone needs an emergency fund. But when budgets get tight, many consumers stop setting money aside for a rainy day, thinking that they can't save enough to matter.

Even if all you can save is $5 a month, bank it, Small amounts add up and can save you from catastrophe if the car or washing machine breaks or you lose your job.

Look at the budget
Some big bills land just a few times a year and wreak havoc with the finances of the forgetful. Auto insurance can be paid just twice a year, for example. Bills for home and life insurance, property, taxes, car registration fees may be sent annually, quarterly or on a bimonthly schedule. And don't forget, of course, holidays and birthdays.

Put out copies of all those irregular bills and divide their costs to come up with a monthly amount that needs to be saved. Also estimate the amount you'll need for holidays and birthday gifts, so you can be saving for these irregular but expected expenses on regular basis.

Read the fine print
There are dozens of little traps in the fine print of financial agreements such as credit card contracts and mortgage loan documents. People who don't read these documents often get blindsided by penalty fees that can cost them thousands of dollars.

When you enter into a financial transaction, read the fine print and keep a copy of the document you signed. If you don't agree with the terms, don't sign the deal. If you do sign, make sure you don't violate the terms of the agreement.

Some traps to watch for: over-limit and overdraft fees; prepayment penalties; and penalty interest rates, which kick in if you have a late payment or two.

Subdomain vs Folders

I'm trying this week a new experiment, I want to see if creating websites as folders within one domain is more beneficial to create more content that is more valuable for the search engines.

From what I've read, it seems that this way I won't have to be creating the ranking for a new subdomain which is considered a new domain. Also, passing some weight from the main site to the folder site is good, which I think is basically the same approach that Wikipedia uses.

After some publishing, both folders and subdomains seem to be picking up, although for some reason using folders seem to work a little better when appearing in organic results.

Creating a web network

Just a few minutes ago, I created a small web page for my main domain called For Clever People. This web will contain an index directory for all my sites (it already points to my Travel Guide and Asbestos websites), instead of just having it empty. It might bring some traffic in the future.

Also starting this week I'll work on another web, which according to what I researched has more searches on a given month, although the competition is very high. But I will also want to try that instead of making subdomains for my websites, I'll start making subdirectories within my main domain. I don't know really how deep will it affect indexing or page rank, but I just have to test it. For wikipedia works just having subfolders, and they rank very well without problems. We'll see what happens.

Started getting free visits

Last weekend I improved a little bit my cruise tips. I made a few modifications also to the feeds that I had there, so it is now updated more dynamically. Also added a World Cruise page, to increase an interesting content.

This week I have a couple of comments to make. The first one is that the website started to get a few visitors and since I don't have the PPC campaign on, I'm assuming that it is from a SERP (Search Engine Results Page) or from one of the links on my articles. Anyway it is a good sign that I'm starting to get some traffic that has not been generated by a campaign.

Another comment that I have to make is that I've got one click, just one, but from this new free traffic, and to my surprise the value that this click paid me was a lot higher than any of those clicks I got from YSM.

By the way, the YSM is changing the minimum bid on the keywords for campaigns, so it might be a way of reducing the cost of traffic generated by PPC.

Another try

Last weekend I worked on a new site, related to the health industry so see how profitable this niche was. I picked an open source template, customized a little bit and put some relevant information related to the keywords I wanted.

During the three or four days of driving traffic through YSM hasn't been that profitable, not a good CTR. Probably is because of the layout and the ads placements. I'll give it another try, changing a little bit the layout to see what happens.

About my first project, it has improved in terms of backlinks, but not good enough to get a good page rank. I'm thinking also in changing things a little bit to see if it improves or not.

Now I have been reading that the crawl interval might increase if every time it visits the page finds new content. I have a couple of ideas on this issue that I'll have to check.

A week after

The last seven days I hit a couple of goals. First, get indexed. I did about 5 articles submissions and about 20 directories submissions. I found the first more useful to get indexed faster, but I hope that once some directories start approving my site, it will improve the rank a little bit. Read More...

The second goal was achieved today. During the weekend I fixed a little bit the home page and the navigation bar in my website. I made the ads blend with the menu, and I think it has been up to a certain point a success, because I earned some cents more of what I spend in the YSM. So I think that my theory of getting a more profitable niche might justify to have the YSM on.

Ten days after first proyect

Ten days have past by and the results of my first project are disappointing. I started with a simple informational website about cruises, to which I redirected traffic through Yahoo Marketing services. But, the profit from the adsense was not enough to cover the YSM expenses, we could say that the ratio expense/income was about 17 to 3 in about ten days.

I'd like to mention that all traffic to my website was done through the campaign. So for every 72 clicks that YSM charged me on my best day, only 8 made a click on my ads. So, in this case, the PPC for my website is way too low to keep directing traffic through a paid campaign. So my next move will be to test whether another niche might justify this approach or not, because I think it is too early to make conclusions out of this one project.

Anyway, I consider this a gain and not a lost, because with this first project I've found how the campaign works and the results that I might expect from this approach.

I've started a new personal project. A couple of weeks ago, I've came across about this new topic called Internet Marketing, which I've never heard before. But I decided to give it a try, since I need to increase my income. Through the following weeks, I'll be posting comments and all my journey through this project.
